Torben Koenigk, SMHI

I am heading the global climate group at SMHI. We have a main focus on developing and applying the global Earth system model EC-Earth, developing tools that are needed for analysis and regional interpretation and using these tools for analysing Earth system model simulations. My personal focus is on Arctic climate and high-latitude ocean processes, their potential future changes and impacts on remote climate. In my spare time I like outdoor activities, e.g. kayaking, hiking, skiing, and I coach a youth football team.
Role in OptimESM: Coordinator and WP8 leader
What motivates you about being part of OptimESM? International cooperation is key to advance the knowledge on future Earth system change and its consequences. Contributing with OptimESM towards these goals by advancing Earth system models and understanding abrupt changes and their regional consequences, motivates me.
International cooperation is key to advance the knowledge on future Earth system change and its consequences.
What particular perspective, skills or expertise do you bring to OptimESM? I have fairly broad experience in the development, application and analysis of Earth system models and I hope that this experience will be helpful in coordinating OptimESM and reaching its goals.
What impact do you hope OptimESM will have, for science or society? OptimESM is making an important step in Earth system model development by further advancing process descriptions in the models and developing methods that allow to bring together these advances with a higher spatial resolution. The developments will hopefully contribute to improve understanding of complex, interacting Earth system processes, such as abrupt changes and tipping points, and will provide better knowledge on the likelihood of exceeding tipping points and the regional consequences to the society.
