Could global warming cause the Gulf Stream to collapse? That’s one of the most common questions SMHI climate scientists are asked.
Often they are actually referring to the AMOC – a larger system of ocean currents in the Atlantic Ocean that includes the Gulf Stream. The AMOC transports heat northwards and contributes to Sweden having a relatively mild climate despite our northern location.
In this episode of the SMHI podcast, we have climate scientist Torben Königk in the studio to answer common questions. Why is the AMOC affected by global warming? What would a weakening – or even a collapse – mean for in Sweden? And how worried should we be about new studies suggesting that the weakening of the AMOC could be much faster than previous research has suggested?
